Dallas Failure to Diagnose Meningitis Lawyer
Spinal Meningitis Injury
One of the most tragic types of medical malpractice cases we see are cases involving the failure to diagnoses bacterial (or spinal) meningitis. Meningitis is easily treated if caught early, but medical malpractice io treatment and diagnosis of meningitis result in terrible injuries: patients lose arms and legs, their sight or hearing. We have handled cases where children were horribly brain damaged, and where babies died.
Meningitis is the inflammation of the lining around the brain (the meninges), and is usually caused by an infection in the spinal fluid. However, it rarely starts in the spinal fluid: the initial infection is more often in common places like sinuses, ears, or the throat, and spreads into the blood stream and then the spinal fluid to infect the brain. In about two thirds of the 10,000 reported cases each year meningitis strikes babies and children, due to their still-developing immune systems. Infants to two-year-olds afflicted with meningitis have the worst prognoses.
Bacterial meningitis is extremely dangerous and necessitates immediate treatment – within just hours, it can cause death or permanent brain damage. The most common strains are Group B strep (newborns), Hemophilius influenza type B (babies), meningococcus (young adults), and pneumococcus (adults). These four strains make up 80% of meningitis incidents in the United States.
